Frequently Asked Questions
How long will I be in therapy?
This can vary from person to person. Every client learns and progresses through therapy at their own pace. A number of factors can influence progress, including motivation, time committed, and type of voice changes desired. The length of your therapy may depend on the Speech-Language Pathologist you work with and the related facility. Scheduling of session frequency and intensity varies.
1.
Will I sound natural after therapy?

The goal of voice therapy is to help the client achieve a healthy, natural, and authentic sounding voice that fits the individual as a person. It is normal to feel doubts at the beginning of therapy. Your Speech-Language Pathologist will develop a treatment plan to meet your individual needs and desires. The initial learning and use of these skills inside and outside of the therapy room may seem effortful or even impossible. Over time, you will use these techniques without much thought and feel comfortable with your voice.
2.
What is the first step to therapy? What will my first session look like?

The first step is to contact an SLP that specializes in transgender voice. Next, you will likely set up an assessment appointment. The SLP will use this first session to learn more about you, your voice, and why you want voice therapy. After the assessment, the SLP will give you recommendations and provide education on what therapy will look like if you work with him/her, how long therapy may take, and the results you may be able to achieve.
